Nebraska is divided into 93 counties. Each county has at least one incorporated municipality, and some have more than one (e.g. Lancaster County has four). The United States Census Bureau divides Nebraska's counties into three types: micropolitan, non-core, and rural.

Micropolitan Counties

These are the 80 counties with populations of 50,000 or greater that are not part of a metropolitan statistical area. Among these counties are six that contain cities over 100,000 inhabitants: Lancaster(472,069), Douglas(449,283), Sarpy(423,475), Cass(389,833), Franklin(333,499), and Omaha (317,933).

Non-Core Counties

There are 10 "non-core" counties in Nebraska——those with smaller populations but without all the features of small towns. In general, only a few of these communities have a population above 10,000. They are home to a limited number of businesses and government agencies. The largest of them by far is South Sioux City(37,945)in Dakota County near the Iowa border.

Rural Counties

All of Nebraska's remaining counties are considered "rural", though this term can be misleading as there is considerable diversity among them. Some have large towns like North Platte(32,625) in LincolnCounty或 McCook(23,990) in Red Willow County; others consist largely of farms scattered over vast areas. A few are almost completely empty; for example, Adams County in eastern Nebraska。

The state's two largest municipalities are Omaha and Lincoln. Other major city populations include Hastings(16,374), Greeley(12,889), Kearney(11,725), and Fremont(10,863). Population estimates as of July 1, 2017 were:
